Snowy Bliss and Hot Cocoa Delight: A Winter Wonderland in 1978

Once upon a chilly day in 1978, the town of Michigan City, Indiana found itself blanketed in a sea of glistening white snow. A massive snowstorm had transformed the familiar streets into a winter wonderland, with every rooftop and tree branch adorned in delicate frost. In the midst of this snowy spectacle, an eleven-year-old adventurer found herself dancing in the warmth of her living room, clad in a bright yellow onesie pajama.

Our protagonist, the spirited soul of Michigan City, couldn't resist the allure of the snow-covered landscape outside her window. As she gazed out, she witnessed a community braving the storm - neighbors diligently shoveling sidewalks, and Mr. Sobieki engaging in a valiant battle against the relentless snow plow determined to reclaim his freshly cleared paths.

After an exhilarating escapade in the snow, the young adventurer's brother, Pat, returned home with their father. Pat, with icicles hanging from his eyebrows, bore witness to the wintry challenges that awaited anyone daring to venture outdoors. Despite the frosty trials, there was an undeniable sense of joy and camaraderie that filled the air.

As the family gathered at the dining room table, the aroma of hot chocolate wafted through the air, offering warmth and comfort to thaw the chill from their bones. Marshmallows bobbed and danced in the mugs, creating a sweet symphony of flavors. The flickering candlelight cast a cozy glow over the scene, turning the dining room into a haven of winter enchantment.

Around that table, surrounded by loved ones and sipping on hot cocoa, they shared tales of their snowy escapades. Laughter echoed as they recounted Mr. Sobieki's epic struggle with the snow plow and Pat's daring adventure across town to check on their grandparents. The vivid images of the day painted a picture of resilience and community spirit, making memories that would be cherished for years to come.

And so, in the heart of that magical snowy evening, our young adventurer realized that even the fiercest winter storms couldn't dampen the warmth and joy that family, hot cocoa, and a vibrant community could bring. As the night unfolded, the glow of the candles and the laughter of loved ones created a timeless memory, etched into the snowy tapestry of Michigan City in 1978.

Snow Prints

In winter's hush, a canvas pure,

A world transformed, serene and sure.

Blanketed fields in glistening white,

A tale unfolds in the softest light.

Footprints etch a transient story,

In the snow's embrace, a dance of glory.

Each step a whisper, a mark in time,

As nature weaves its silent rhyme.

Beneath the silver moon's embrace,

A solitary path takes its grace.

Crunching snow, a rhythmic song,

As shadows play, the night is long.

Tiny imprints of fleeting beings,

Leave a trace of secret meetings.

The trees stand witness, silent and tall,

To the tales written, winter's thrall.

A symphony of silence fills the air,

As footprints weave a tale so rare.

In the stillness, a world reborn,

A poetry of winter, softly worn.

The crisp air echoes a lullaby,

Footprints in the snow, beneath the sky.

A journey told in frozen art,

Nature's canvas, a work of heart.

Oh, footprints in the snow so deep,

In your mystery, secrets keep.

A fleeting glimpse of lives unknown,

In winter's realm, a story sown.

Reminiscing about Chiang Mai 2018

Reminiscing about ThaiTESOL

My proposal was accepted for 2024 Thai TESOL, but I couldn't go. My body is still not ready for international travel. But here are my recollections from the 2018 event I attended.

The Thai TESOL International Conference took place on January 26th and 27th, 2018, in the vibrant city of Chiang Mai, Thailand, hosted at The Empress Hotel. Amidst the picturesque setting of Chiang Mai, the conference offered a unique blend of professional development and cultural experiences, making it an enriching event for educators.

Souveniers from the gathering & market

Chiang Mai, known for its rich cultural heritage, is a city that embraces outdoor markets, delectable food, and exquisite artisan crafts. The conference venue at The Empress Hotel provided a fitting backdrop to the convergence of educators from diverse backgrounds, contributing to the lively and multicultural atmosphere of the event.

The conference agenda was teeming with engaging activities, including a pre-conference workshop titled "Empowering Learners and Teachers in the Digital Age." The theme of "Digital Literacy in English Language Learning and Teaching" was explored through three plenaries, with each speaker bringing a unique perspective to the forefront.

Cynthia White, in her opening plenary, delved into "Language Teacher Agency in the Digital Age," emphasizing the role of individuals and institutions in adapting to the changing digital environment. The focus on Thai tertiary institutions added a local touch to the discussion, reflecting the conference's connection to the host city.

Randall Davis, a renowned figure in ESL education, shared insights in his plenary, "Embracing and Celebrating Imperfection on the Road to Better Teaching." His reflections on the limitations and vulnerabilities inherent in navigating the digital age provided a balanced perspective to the discussions on technology in education.

Mike Levy, in the third plenary, offered a comprehensive exploration of "Digital Literacy" and its impact on language learning. Levy's insights into different literacies and cognitive capacities in the digital age resonated well with the conference's theme.

The cultural exchange extended beyond the plenaries, with KOTESOL members actively participating and presenting on various topics. Maria Lisak, as the KOTESOL representative to ThaiTESOL, conducted a workshop on "Electronic Teaching Journal," while Bryan Hale explored the use of "Online Google apps for painless, productive student collaboration."

The atmosphere at the conference was characterized by its active, thoughtful, and multicultural nature. Presentations from members of different professional organizations, such as MELTA, PELLTA, and PALT, added depth to the discussions, reflecting the diversity of perspectives within the English Language Teaching (ELT) community.

The conference layout, strategically designed to facilitate learning and networking, provided attendees with opportunities to explore exhibitors, enjoy Thai snacks, and engage in discussions. The inclusion of special Thai language sessions and a dedicated research forum for graduate students showcased the commitment to a holistic approach to English language education.

In conclusion, the collaboration between KOTESOL and ThaiTESOL in Chiang Mai exemplified the commitment to fostering professional development in a multicultural setting. Beyond the intellectual exchanges, attendees had the chance to immerse themselves in Chiang Mai's unique atmosphere, characterized by its outdoor markets, culinary delights, and artisan crafts. For educators seeking not only professional growth but also a rich cultural experience, the Thai TESOL International Conference in Chiang Mai offered a remarkable opportunity to expand networks and broaden horizons in the field of English language education.

A Winter Wonderland in Recovery: Reflecting on my South Korean Hospital Experience in 2021

As I sit down to recount my experience in a South Korean hospital on this day in 2021, I am filled with a myriad of emotions. The memory is still vivid – the smell of disinfectants, the sound of footsteps echoing in the sterile corridors, and the winter chill that greeted me every time I stepped outside. It was a time of recovery, of healing, and of finding solace in the midst of a snowy South Korean landscape.

Recovering from Plastic Surgery:

The reason for my stay was a recent plastic surgery on my arm. Despite the discomfort, I was grateful for my mobility, allowing me to explore the hospital grounds and its surroundings. The medical staff at the hospital was attentive and compassionate, making the recovery process more bearable.

Walking in the Snow:

One of the most enchanting aspects of my stay was the winter wonderland that unfolded outside the hospital walls. South Korea's winters are known for their snowy landscapes, and stepping out into the crisp air was a refreshing contrast to the antiseptic environment inside. The snowflakes delicately danced from the sky, creating a serene ambiance that provided a stark yet beautiful backdrop to my recovery journey.

Exploring Rest Areas:

The hospital had designated rest areas adorned with picturesque views of snow-covered trees and benches, inviting patients to take a moment to breathe in the tranquility. These rest areas became my refuge – a place where I could escape the clinical setting, connect with nature, and reflect on the progress of my healing journey.

Breathing in the Cold Air:

There's something invigorating about breathing in the cold air, especially when surrounded by the pristine beauty of a snow-covered landscape. Each inhale felt crisp, awakening my senses and providing a sense of clarity. The therapeutic effects of nature played a crucial role in boosting my spirits and aiding in the recovery process.

Waiting to Heal:

Recovery is not only a physical process but also a mental and emotional one. The serene winter landscape became a metaphor for my journey – a reminder that healing takes time, patience, and embracing the beauty in the process. As I walked through the hospital grounds, I felt a sense of resilience and hope, knowing that each step was a small victory on the path to complete healing.

As I reflect on my time in the South Korean hospital in 2021, I am grateful for the unique blend of medical care and natural beauty that played a pivotal role in my recovery. The snow, the cold air, and the rest areas provided more than just a backdrop; they became integral elements of my healing journey. This experience has left an indelible mark on my memory, serving as a reminder that sometimes, amidst the challenges, we can find unexpected moments of beauty and tranquility.

A Walk Down Memory Lane: Chungjangno in October 2009

As I flip through the pages of memory, one particular October stands out vividly - a month filled with the bustling energy of Gwangju's vibrant events. Among them, the Chungjangno Festival took center stage, creating a magical tapestry of parades, performances, and an abundance of cultural delights. Join me as we take a nostalgic stroll through the streets of Chungjangno in October 2009, where every corner held the promise of new discoveries.

The Allure of Chungjangno Festival

The air was electric with excitement as the Chungjangno Festival unfolded from October 13th to the 18th. The city was a hub of activity, with events like the Design Biennale, Kimchi Festival, and GIPAF adding to the cultural kaleidoscope. The festival, a celebration of art, music, and community, brought together locals and visitors alike, creating an atmosphere of unity and joy.

Parades and New Discoveries

One evening, I found myself captivated by a parade in Chungjangno, a sight adorned with the lively beats of two high school marching bands. It was a novel experience, a cultural surprise that added an extra layer of charm to the already vibrant streets. The city seemed to pulsate with the rhythm of the parade, a memory etched in my mind.

Boutiques, Cafes, and Galleries

Downtown Gwangju, especially around the festival, was a treasure trove of boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and galleries. Among these gems were some newfound favorites that, sadly, now exist only in the recesses of memory. Golden Rabbits Cafe behind GIC, with its connection to Gallery D, showcased a diverse exhibition, a testament to the eclectic art scene in Gwangju.

Bottle Cafe and Bistro, discovered during a leisurely walk, offered an ambiance reminiscent of Rue de la Course in New Orleans. The mention of First Nepal, still hailed as the best Indian food in Chungjangno, brings back the aroma of spices and memories of culinary exploration.

Cafes and the Essence of Chungjangno

Cafes like Cafe Serendipity, MK Cafe, and others once added to the charm of Chungjangno's culinary landscape. The streets, cordoned off for parades and performances, housed Lemon Table, Olive Cafe, Gloria Jean's Coffee, Al-Arab, and Thali - each offering a unique perspective on food, coffee, and the communal joy of the festival.

As I reminisce about the October of 2009, the Chungjangno Festival stands out as a magical moment in time. The streets echoed with laughter, the air was thick with the scent of diverse cuisines, and the city came alive with artistic fervor. Though the boutiques, cafes, and galleries have faded into the past, the memories of that enchanting time remain, a testament to the enduring spirit of Chungjangno and the vibrant culture it encapsulated. Join me in cherishing these moments, for they are the threads that weave the fabric of our connection to this remarkable city.

Journey to Yeosu's Mystical Peak: Hyangiram Hermitage and the Temple Stay Experience

From a Gwangju International Center tour in 2012

Nestled amidst the lush mountains of Yeosu, South Korea, Hyangiram Hermitage stands as a testament to centuries of spiritual devotion and mythical allure. This sacred sanctuary, a cultural treasure, beckons pilgrims and adventure seekers alike to embark on a journey steeped in history, legends, and the promise of wish fulfillment.

Unveiling the Origins

Imagine tracing the roots of Hyangiram Hermitage back to the year 644, a time when Monk Wonhyo laid the foundation for what was then known as Wontongam Hermitage during the reign of Baekje King Uija. Over the centuries, this haven of serenity underwent transformations, evolving into Geumoam Hermitage and eventually adopting the name Hyangiram Hermitage in 1715 under the guidance of Monk Inmuk during the Joseon era.

The Enigmatic Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

This spiritual haven is not just any hermitage; it is one of the select few in Korea where devotees converge to offer prayers to the compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The air here is thick with reverence and whispers of ancient prayers, creating an atmosphere that transcends time.

A Trail of Wishes

The journey to Hyangiram Hermitage is not for the faint of heart. Ascending the steep mountain path, pilgrims are met with panoramic views that rival the majesty of their aspirations. Legend has it that the path is more than just a physical ascent – it is a quest for wishes to be granted. The trek passes through seven stone caves, each imbued with its own mystique. Those who conquer this trail find themselves one step closer to the realization of their deepest desires.

The Dance of Fire and Resilience

The hermitage's story is not without challenges. In 2012, the main hall, Daeungjeon Hall, succumbed to the unforgiving dance of flames. However, from the ashes rose a testament to resilience as it was meticulously rebuilt, preserving the sanctity and grandeur of this sacred space. The Daeungjeon Hall now stands as a symbol of rebirth, welcoming visitors with open arms.

Awakening the Soul: A Temple Stay Experience with Sunrise and Sunset Meditations

Embarking on a temple stay is not merely a retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life; it's a profound journey into the heart of tranquility. Imagine a place where the ancient echoes of Buddhist chants mingle with the crisp morning air and where the sun's golden embrace paints the sky in hues of serenity. This is the essence of a temple stay, an immersive experience that not only rejuvenates the body but also nourishes the spirit.

Early Morning Meditations

As the first light of dawn pierces through the temple's ancient walls, participants of the temple stay find themselves immersed in a world of quiet introspection. The early morning meditation sessions, guided by seasoned monks, offer a unique opportunity to connect with the profound stillness that blankets the temple grounds. The rhythmic chants, the fragrance of incense, and the gentle rustling of leaves create an ambiance that transcends the temporal, inviting participants to delve into the depths of their own consciousness.

Sunrise Serenity

The temple, perched atop a serene landscape, becomes a vantage point for witnessing nature's grand spectacle – the sunrise. Picture yourself on a hillside platform or within the temple courtyard, eyes closed in meditation as the first rays of light gently kiss the surroundings awake. The air is charged with a quiet anticipation, and as the sun emerges, it bathes the temple in a warm glow, casting shadows that dance with the ancient architecture.

Spectacular Views

The temple stay experience is not only about looking inward; it's also about embracing the expansive beauty that surrounds you. Whether nestled in a valley or atop a mountain, many temples offer breathtaking views of nature's wonders. The panoramic landscapes unfold like a canvas, inviting participants to wander through lush gardens, meditative pathways, and tranquil ponds. It's a visual feast that complements the inner journey, creating a harmonious balance between self-reflection and appreciation for the world outside.

Sunset Reflections

As the day gently surrenders to the evening, participants gather once more for sunset meditations. The fading light paints the sky in hues of amber and lavender, casting a serene backdrop for the evening's contemplative practice. The meditative chants and the distant hum of nature intertwine with the last moments of daylight, creating an atmosphere that encourages a peaceful transition into the night.

In Closing

A temple stay with its early morning meditations and the mesmerizing views of sunrise and sunset becomes a holistic experience, blending the sacred rituals of Buddhist practice with the timeless beauty of nature. It is an invitation to not only witness the world's natural wonders but to become an integral part of this tranquil tapestry, where the boundaries between self and surroundings blur in the pursuit of inner peace. In the shadow of Hyangiram Hermitage, may your journey be blessed with the fulfillment of dreams and the timeless magic of Hyangiram.

A Tranquil New Year's Eve: Reflecting on my Temple Stay at Baekyangsa

As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve in 2003, I found myself far away from the bustling city lights, in the serene embrace of Baekyangsa, a hidden gem nestled in the tranquil mountains of South Korea. Accompanied by my dear friends, 8ball and Katie, this temple stay turned out to be an unforgettable journey of self-discovery and serenity.

The night was not adorned with a blanket of snow, and I chose to forego the pre-dawn hike to witness the first sunrise of the year. Instead, I embraced the stillness of the temple grounds, finding solace in the quietude that surrounded me. Baekyangsa, with its centuries-old history and breathtaking architecture, offered a unique sanctuary for reflection and introspection.

One of the highlights of the temple stay was the warm respite I found at the nearby teahouse. Nestled against the backdrop of ancient trees and the melodious chants echoing from the temple, the teahouse provided a haven for weary travelers seeking warmth and connection. Sipping on a cup of steaming tea, I felt the soothing effects of the herbal brew seep into my soul, grounding me in the present moment.

The essence of Korea's temple stay system revealed itself through the serene rituals, guided meditations, and insightful teachings from the resident monks. Each moment became an opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of Korean Buddhism, immersing myself in the traditions that have withstood the test of time.

As the night unfolded, the temple became a cocoon of tranquility, and the rhythmic sounds of the temple bell echoed through the crisp air. New Year's resolutions took on a profound meaning as I stood under the vast expanse of the star-studded sky, contemplating the path ahead.

In the morning light, I witnessed the temple come alive with the first rays of the sun. Though I missed the pre-dawn hike, the sense of renewal was palpable. The temple grounds, blanketed in a soft glow, offered a visual symphony of nature and spirituality, a perfect metaphor for the fresh start that a new year brings.
